Now that the weather is getting warmer, many people are going to be starting to have fires in their backyards. It’s a fun and easy social thing that everyone enjoys. Unfortunately, those of you who have frequent fires know that the wood burns down fast, and eventually those $5-$8 bags of wood begin to add up to a lot more than you were expecting. This is why you should consider buying bulk firewood.

  • Ask your firewood supplier about a deal  – This can be a difficult thing for some people to do. Do you want a good deal and plan on buying a decent amount of wood from one supplier? Ask them if they will give you a deal for large quantity firewood purchases.
  • Semi-loads –   If you have the room, buying bulk firewood by the semi load can save a lot of money. The wood typically comes in 8 foot lengths often referred to as a “pulp cord” or “loggers cord.” The downside to this method is the fact that you have to cut it up yourself. If you have the equipment and don’t mind the extra work, buying bulk firewood by the semi load is a great option.
  • Having It Delivered – This is the easiest way but it’s also one of the most expensive. Some suppliers will advertise bulk rates while others may not. Chances are if you ask you might just find a good deal.

Garden State Mulch Supply  offers bulk fire wood as well as other products such as mulch and topsoil to the Central NJ area. Many people believe that wood chips or mulches are only used for aesthetic reasons, but there are many helpful and practical reasons for them as well. Below are many of the benefits of adding wood chips to your property:

  • Saves labor: wood chips means little or no weeding, less time watering.
  • Saves water: far less watering is needed and there is more water absorption.
  • Safer: no need for chemical weed killers or herbicides.
  • Stimulates growth: mulched trees grow faster than trees that haven’t been mulched.
  • Makes trees more resistant to disease and insects.
  • Keeps soil and roots from overheating in hot summers.
  • Eliminates injury to trunk from mower collisions.
  • Reduces soil compaction on roots.
  • Nourishes the soil by adding nutrients as it decomposes.
  • Eliminates the need for tilling and resultant root injury.
  • Increase in earthworm population resulting in better aeration.
  • Wood chips reduce bruising of fallen fruit under fruit trees.

Summer mulch can make any garden look nice and, now that summer is finally here, your gardens have had a chance to warm up and dry out a bit. Now you can add a layer of summer mulch. Summer mulch is best because too early in spring can promote the spread of mildew and fungus. Summer mulch cuts down on weeds, helps keep soil temperatures from fluctuating and slows the loss of moisture to evaporation

To properly mulch, spread a 2- to 3-inch layer of wood chips, shredded bark or cocoa bean hulls over the soil around shrubs, trees and perennial plants. If your layer of mulch is not thick enough, then it will not be as effective at keeping weeds from growing as it could be. In produce beds, you can mulch with chipped leaves, dried grass clippings, hay, partially completed compost or shredded newspaper, which can be turned into the soil at the end of the season. If you don’t care so much about how your gardens look, you can lay cardboard or even strips of old carpeting between the rows of vegetables. One thing to be careful of is Cocoa bean mulch. It looks and smells good, but can develop mold in wet areas. It’s also a concern for dog owners because it can contain theobormine, which can be toxic to dogs.
